This is a book I wish the student counseling services at my Christian university would have read. It robustly explains the sufficiency of God's Word to speak to human conditions and gives several strong practical demonstrations of how to use the Bible in counseling (both formal and one-another ministry). This book highlights things that I, as a ministry student wrestling with depression, specifically remember needing and resolved to implement when I minister to others, and it fleshed those ideas out and reinforced them with case studies. Chapters 10-11 were VERY dense, but they provide a solid outline to refer to over and over again until you are comfortable with the process Kelleman describes; they are more tools to utilize repeatedly than chapters to read and absorb in one sitting. The later chapters are especially helpful for people with a background in hermeneutics/inductive Bible study, but the authors do a great job explaining if you do not have such a background. My only real complaint was that the first five chapters are a bit slow, but only if you are strong on sufficiency of Scripture. For many people the first five chapters are the most important section they will read, because without that foundation the rest of the book loses its meaning.Overall a wonderful resource that pastors and their churches should work through and that ministry students should read. I prefer the biblical counseling book Self-Confrontation. But this book will do if you are not going to be a licensed biblical counselor.
